Q. Will having a tooth implanted hurt?
A. After implanting over 1,000 teeth, I’ve found my patients find that the tooth implant is a minimal invasive procedure. ,/
Q. What about any pain after tooth implanting?
A. You’ll find you get the most soreness in the first 24 – 48 hours. You can use Paracetamol/Ibuprofen in this period. After this period any discomfort will subside.
Q. Will you be able to eat normally with a tooth implant?
A. The answer is yes most definitely. You’ll be able to eat all the things you can eat with your normal teeth. And this includes foodstuffs like apples and nuts.
Q. What about cleaning your new tooth implant?
A. You must not put any force on your new implant for the first 8 weeks. This is to allow time for your new implant to fuse to your bone. Meticulous brushing is required, all the time.
Q. How long will the tooth implant last?
A. US studies reveal that tooth implants fitted 30 years ago, are still working today. So you should have no concerns in this area.
Q. What about going abroad for my tooth implants? I’ve heard tooth implants are cheaper overseas.
A. Sure tooth implants are cheaper if you have them performed overseas. And there are some very good reasons for this. UK guidelines for dentistry are much stricter. And our dental equipment has to be of a much higher spec. Plus, UK dentists are more regulated.
Also you need to ask yourself some other questions before going abroad.
1. Are you going to be able to see the dentist the same day in a emergency?
2. What are you going to do if you have a problem with your tooth implant in 3-4 years? Will you get to see the same dentist who fitted them? Will you be able to go back to the dental practice? Will that dental practice with your dental records still be in business?
3. How will your overseas dentist monitor your new implant? Most tooth implants which fail, do so in the first 12 months. This is the period when your tooth implant needs to be monitored. Are you prepared to keep jetting out overseas? Costing you extra in flights and hotels.
If you have a tooth implant fitted by a local dentist then they can monitor it closely.
4. If an implant does fail, then your gum and bone can become infected. This can become serious and needs to be treated quickly. So are you prepared to fly at short notice to your overseas dentist? And will he see you quickly as an emergency case?
